Different action situations: Mark III series
Below are some initial suggestions for action photographer, to optimize
the EOS-1D Mark III. Of course, each user is going to need to assess
their needs, their precise shooting methods, and experiment with settings
to come up with those that are best for the subjects they’re shooting.
Fast action in bright daylight (lots of contrast):
C.Fn III-2 moderately slow (AF response to sudden changes)
C.Fn III-3-0 (Sharp focus is always priority, for first and subsequent shots — drive speed may slow down to assure this)
C.Fn III-4-1 (Camera won’t try to focus on closer subjects, if more than one AF point is active, during AI Servo AF)
C.Fn III-5-1 (Lens won’t try to “hunt” if subject is radically out of focus)
C.Fn III-7 AF Microadjustment — as needed, if required
C.Fn III-8-0 or III-8-1 (Expand size of a manually-selected AF point — none or one additional point, left & right of selected pt.)
In-camera Picture Style settings (especially for JPEG shooters) — Neutral or Faithful
In-camera sharpening (if no image manipulation in computer) — level 2 or 3
Fast action in overcast or indoor lighting (low subject contrast):
C.Fn III-2 normal
C.Fn III-3-0 (Sharp focus is always priority, for first and subsequent shots — drive speed may slow down to assure this)
C.Fn III-4-1 (Camera won’t try to focus on closer subjects, if more than one AF point is active, during AI Servo AF)
C.Fn III-5-1 (Lens won’t try to “hunt” if subject is radically out of focus)
C.Fn III-7 AF Microadjustment — as needed, if required
C.Fn III-8-1 or III-8-2 (Expand size of a manually-selected AF point — one additional AF point to right and left,
or invisible ring of six additional AF points surrounding original selected AF point)
In-camera Picture Style settings (especially JPEG shooters) — Standard if low contrast; Neutral if contrasty
In-camera sharpening (if no computer manipulation) — level 2 or 3
Fast, continuous action that won’t change speed or direction (auto racing, Olympic sprinting, etc.):
C.Fn III-2 — moderately fast
C.Fn III-3-0 (Sharp focus is always priority, for first and subsequent shots — drive speed may slow down to assure this)
C.Fn III-4-1 (Camera won’t try to focus on closer subjects, if more than one AF point is active, during AI Servo AF)
C.Fn III-5-0 (Lens is allowed to try to re-focus if the AF point is suddenly on a totally out-of-focus subject)
C.Fn III-7 — AF Microadjustment — as needed, if required
C.Fn III-8-0 or III-8-1 (Expand size of a manually-selected AF point — none or one additional point, left & right of selected pt.)
In-camera Picture Style setting — refer to contrasty daylight or overcast/indoor suggestions above
In-camera sharpening — refer to contrasty daylight or overcast/indoor suggestions above
