Names of peregrine filiation are generally of Latin or Celtic origin, ex-
cept one: the name Gannicus is attested only in two instances, here
and in the province Gallia Belgica: CIL XIII 5137. Holder
(Sprach-
schatz I, 1982) defines it as Germanic. The name Mannus is also pre-
served in only two places, here and in Hispania (Onomasticon III,
51). The name can be of Celtic or Germanic origin. These two names
were used on the simple funerary slab found in Slovenian Carinthia.
Gannicus, son of Mannus, could have moved from the Northern pro-
vinces to the Celeian ager, but we will never be able to discover what
were the impulses or the nature of his potential migration.
